job-shaped software

job-shaped software

self.md radar — 2026-04-18

a design mockup, a cost-aware router, and an obsidian database all landed in the same window, which is another way of saying the generic chatbot is getting skinned into job-shaped software.

the preview deck: Claude Design as the cleanest example of AI escaping the blank chat box, a convergence signal from the routing and runtime layer, and an Obsidian Bases media tracker as the end-user version of the same surface shift.

1. anthropic stops pitching a model and starts pitching a design department

sources:

what happened:

anthropic launched Claude Design through Anthropic Labs. the product is pitched as a way to make designs, prototypes, slides, and one-pagers by talking to Claude. it exports to Canva, PDF, and PPTX, can hand work off to Claude Code, and can read a team codebase and design files to build a design system. one of the day’s strongest reactions framed it as a direct enough move that Figma stock fell 4.26% on the news.

why this matters:

the shift is not “AI helps designers” in the abstract. it is a frontier lab trying to own a finished creative workflow instead of renting attention inside a chat window — and the market priced it that way same-day.

2. agent routing is turning into household infrastructure

sources:

what happened:

Manifest describes itself as a smart model router for personal AI agents, with a 23-dimension scoring algorithm, automatic fallbacks, budget limits, and a dashboard for token, cost, model, and duration data. it routes requests to the cheapest model that can handle them and claims cost cuts up to 70%. VM0 runs Claude Code in cloud sandboxes around the clock with persistence, logs, metrics, network visibility, scheduling, and skill-native compatibility.

why this matters:

this is not another agent framework blurb. it is the stack around the stack becoming productized — routing, budgeting, observability, persistence, and scheduled execution all shipping as standalone repos in the same week. the plumbing layer is consolidating faster than the application layer above it.

3. obsidian bases keeps mutating into a personal app builder

sources:

what happened:

a user turned Obsidian Bases into a media tracker with cover art, status pills, one-click clipping, and custom templates. the setup uses Obsidian Web Clipper plus custom templates for sources like MyAnimeList and Letterboxd. the interesting part is not the fandom use case; it is that people keep bending their notes stack into narrow, usable software with real interface affordances.

why this matters:

this is the personal-software version of the same surface shift. people are not waiting for one giant app to solve everything — they are assembling their own software surfaces out of whatever tool lets them skip the blank page fastest.
